By taking 15 minutes to read this article, you could save hundreds of dollars on your next surf trip.
You’ll also save yourself some time and trouble, so you can worry about the surf forecast instead.
(Remember those Geico commercials? 😆)
The wrong airline could leave you spending $300+ on fees, hours and hours wasted on delays, and for what?
Only to find out that your beloved surfboard has been shattered into a million beautiful pieces?
On the contrary, you can use creative ways to fly affordably, pick an airline with a good reputation, and maximize your travel experience.
But even with a good airline, getting a surfboard to your destination safely is almost equal parts luck as it is strategy. And if you don’t properly pack your surfboard to endure the harsh treatment from unstoked airline workers, you’re doomed from the start.
When it comes to luggage fees, most airlines vary in how they process surfboards. Some airlines charge extra and some airlines don’t charge at all.
Many factors affect the price you’ll pay to fly with your surfboard:
- Your destination
- Quality of your ticket (economy vs first class)
- Number of passengers on your flight
- Policy updates (which change all the time)
- Even the mood of the employee across the desk choosing your fate…
A smile and kind voice goes a long way at the ticket counter. Go on, get flirty 😏.
You’ll find that a lot of the charges placed on excess baggage and sports equipment fall on the judgement of the ticket agent.
I’ve put together a list of all the major airlines you may come across during your surf travels (all 169 of them!)
I included the most recent information on surfboard fees for each and every airline in 2024, but I didn’t stop there. I also provided their contact information, some first-hand stories, and a rating of 1 through 10 (10 being the best).
I literally spent dozens of hours compiling this information for you 😅 (can I take a surf break now?)
One thing I learned is that many airlines calculate the size of your surfboard bag by linear dimensions instead of length. This is calculated by adding the length, width, and thickness of your bag.
For example, a board bag that is 76″ long, 36″ wide, and 12″ thick, equals 124 linear inches.
Keep this in mind when reading this article.
Again, these policies change as frequently as the weather. I recommend contacting your airline to confirm there are no hidden fees waiting for you at the ticket counter!
The ONLY thing I ask of you:
If you have any personal stories with these airlines (whether good or bad), please share in the comment section below, so other surfers can steer in the right direction.
Now let’s get flying.
Aegean Airlines

Contact: +1 (833) 732-8158

Air Belgium
Surfboard Fee: N/A
Contact: +32 10 23 45 87
Rating: 8.2/10
Air Belgium after a brief five year run is no longer flying passengers. After being priced out of the market due to rising inflation and fuel costs from COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, Air Belgium now exclusively operates shipping cargo and leasing planes in it’s fleet. You probably weren’t looking into Air Belgium to begin with but if you were, now you know.

Air Canada
Surfboard Fee: $100-$120 (each way)
Contact: +1 (888) 247-2262
Rating: 7.5/10
Canadians are always nice? Not when it comes to surfboard fees. If your surfboard and bag is over 5’2″ (or over 50lbs), it qualifies as special baggage. The special baggage fee will run you $100-$120.
It is also important to note that this fee will be charged EACH WAY, so when you book a round trip ticket expect to pay between $200 and $240 for your surfboard.
Another important note to make is Air Canada’s policy states the maximum linear dimensions per bag is to be 62″ (158 cm). I’m not sure how strictly this rule is enforced however, based on the research I was able to complete I can tell you I will be avoiding Air Canada for my surf trips.
I’ve also heard that Air Canada only allows one board per bag (and they check)… That being said, it’s hard to say whether or not that is standard practice or if someone just got unlucky with a tough ticket agent. All boards must have fins taken off and should be registered with the airline 24 hours before departure.
Air Caraïbes
Surfboard Fee: Free-$55
Contact: 0820 835 835
Rating: 4/10
Air Caraibes’ website (when it works) doesn’t provide any information on surfboards. That being said, I was able to deploy my mediocre researching skills to find out that yes, they do accept surfboards as part of your free checked baggage allowance as long as it fits within their size requirements.
Surfboards must not exceed a linear length of 90 x 75 x 55 cm. If your surfboard exceeds these measurements you can still bring it after paying a $55 fee (each way).
Air China
Surfboard Fee: $400-$800
Contact: +1 (800) 882-8122
Rating: 4/10
According to Air China’s website each passenger is only allowed to bring one surfboard. The fees associated with this vary and in all honesty their website made it pretty difficult to understand.
To my knowledge Air China charges on a weight based system. If your bag is under 50lbs you’re going to get hit with a $400 fee. If your bag is over fifty pounds you’re looking at upwards of $800 in fees.
This sounds astronomically high and it would be an absolute nightmare to get hit with the ultimatum of leaving your surfboards at the airport or having to fork over $400+.
If anyone has experience with Air China, leave a comment below and tell us what it was like. Regardless, I would steer clear of this airline and opt for China Air (yes they are different).
Air Corsica
Surfboard Fee: Free!
Contact: 0825 35 35 35 / support-commercial@aircorsica.com

Contact: +39 045 2886140 / salescenter@airdolomiti.it

Air Dolomiti does not allow surfboard bags over 6’5″ and 70lbs on their flights. If your board is under 6’5″ it can fly for free as a piece of your checked luggage as long as you have purchased a ticket that includes checked baggage.

Contact: +1 (800) 237-2747 / contact@airfrance.fr
Rating: 5/10
Air France requires you to keep your luggage under 50lbs (70lbs if you’re in business class) and under 9’8ft in length. If your surf bag is the only bag you are traveling with you have the ability to check it in under your checked baggage allowance.
This being said, Air France operates using a zone system. For flights to and from the United States, Canada or Mexico, or for corresponding flights via one of these countries: If your surfboard is less than 42 inches in length and less than 50 lbs in weight, there is no extra charge if it is the only baggage that you want to check in (or one out of the 2 baggage items allowed for the Business and La Première cabins.).
At the airport, you need to pay an additional charge that varies based on the geographical zones (zones 1 – 5): Zone 2 – €65 ($75) on flights departing from a country outside Europe. Zone 4 – €125 on departures from a country within the European zone (175 CAD on departures from Canada, 150 USD on departures from all other countries). Zone 5: €100 on departures from a country within the European zone (120 CAD on departures from Canada, $100 USD on departures from all other countries.
If your baggage exceeds the maximum weight limit, you need to pay for an additional baggage.

Surfboards over 6’6″ in length will be subject to additional charges, I was unable to find weight restrictions.

All surfboards over 5 feet will be charged $150. When traveling to certain locations (including Cuba) your surfboards will not be able to be checked in with you as luggage… As the old timer at my local break always says, “commies don’t surf”.

CEBU Pacific Air

CEBU does allow surfboards to fly as checked luggage however, you must purchase a “Prepaid Baggage or Sports Equipment Allowance”. Unfortunately they do not list how much these fees are (possibly because it depends on your itinerary?). However, I did hear from a reader that they were charged $38 (USD) to take their board from Cebu, Philippines to Bali, Indonesia. To be safe, I’d expect this as a minimum expectation.
In order to see which fees apply to you, go check out their website, fill in your desired destination, and look into purchasing the prepaid baggage allowance.
Cathay Pacific

If your surfboard is over 5 feet in length you will have to pay $150 handling fee. In addition to this, you will also be required to pay 4X the cost of a standard additional bag. BUT WAIT, THERE”S MORE 🤡. If that isn’t shitty enough, I’ve heard this is per board. Not per bag.
When it comes to Cathay Pacific, there’s horror stories of surfers having to chose between leaving a board behind or paying upwards of $600 in fees. Long story short, this is a good airline to avoid.

China Airlines
Surfboard Fee: Free-$180
Contact: +1 (800) 227-5118
Rating: 6/10
This airline is a roll of the dice. I’ve flown boards from Bali to LA without having to pay a penny yet some people get stuck paying hefty excess baggage fees.
Their website states “because the surfboard does not exceed the weight limit of 23 kg (50lbs) for a single piece of baggage and it is included in sport equipment exceptions without size limit, passenger will only need to pay a one-time excess baggage charge US $180”.
Check their website or call to confirm but regardless, cross your fingers and hope for some merciful good luck. Just because I got lucky once does not mean it will happen again.

$486 when traveling to/from USA
$556 when traveling to/from Europe, Australia, Japan, and Korea
$417 when traveling to/from Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Middle East

China Southern Airlines
Surfboard Fee: $170? (very confusing)
Contact: +86-20-86682000 / customerservice@csair.com
Rating: 8/10
China Southern, similar to China Eastern, allows surfboards as long as you pay some fees first.
Charges for domestic flights:
Charges for surfboards not to exceed 9 feet should be calculated based on the fees for 5 kg of excess baggage. Charges for surfboards with perimeters exceeding 9 feet should be calculated based on the fees for 8 kg of excess baggage.
Charges for international flights:
Charges for surfboards with perimeters of no more than 9’8″ should be calculated on the basis of excess baggage fees (charging standard for general overweight baggage) equalling up to $170.
I’ve encountered some pretty funky shit throughout my travels. But the way China Southern Airlines calculate their oversize baggage fees is by far one of the most confusing systems I’ve ever seen. Plan on paying a couple hundred bucks or avoiding this airline all together.
But if it were up to me, if you can solve their baggage fee puzzle you should be able to fly for free 😅

Surfboards can be checked in for free as part of your general baggage allowance. Maximum weight is 51lbs. Maximum length is 10 feet. Air Emirates is known to have a great reputation behind it however, some of our readers advise that you proceed with caution.
One member from our email list mentioned (through their own experience) that the airline employees do not have a clear understanding of what the size policy/requirements are. Their website said one thing, the employee on the phone said another, and the ticket agent at the airport had their own idea… At the end of the day, they were forced to leave their boards behind on their trip to Indonesia.

If your surfboards exceed the size restrictions they will only be accepted if there is space available in the cargo hold. Excess baggage fees will apply.
Something to be aware of, I have heard stories from people reporting that Eva Air will try to extort you (for lack of better terms) for as much as they can when traveling with surfboards. So when you show up to the airport, have this information at the ready so you are not at the mercy of a rogue ticket agent who’s trying to get some admiration from their boss.

When flying with Gulf your surfboard can be checked in for free as standard luggage as long as it fits within Gulf’s size restrictions (these vary depending on flight). For most standard flights, as long as your surfboard bag is under 9’8″ and 50lbs you should have no issues getting it on your flight free of charge. You’re even allowed two boards per bag.
However, Gulf does state “surfboards over 72 inches in length are not allowed on Gulf Connection carrier flights”. This means you may have issues on smaller planes traveling shorter distances (aka connecting flights) if you are traveling with a surfboard over 6 feet. You may be able to talk your way around this. But regardless, this is something to be aware of.

Hawaiian Airlines
Surfboard Fee: $25-$75 (each way)
Contact: +1 (877) 426-4537
Rating: 4/10
Hawaiian Airlines will not be the cheapest option when traveling with surfboards but at least they make their information accessible compared to that of China Air.
When flying between the islands expect to pay $25 each way. For flights to North America and other areas of the world expect to pay $75 each way. Hawaiian airlines is known to charge this fee per board you will be traveling with and supposedly you are not allowed to put clothes or other items into your surf bag.
However, an important note to make is surfers report having surfboards damaged by Hawaiian Airlines. And from what I’ve heard, getting Hawaiian Airlines to compensate for these damages is like trying to convince a local that you deserve extra waves because you’re not “from here”.

Believe it or not… Iran is surprisingly one of the most desired surf locations in the world. Just kidding.
But if you do find yourself flying with Iran Air, don’t expect to bring your surfboards. Baggage information for this airline is extremely difficult to find and everything I was able to see show that you are unable to fly with baggage over 3’7″ in length.
You’re better off staying away from Iran Air, and quite honestly Iran in general (categorized level 4 DO NOT travel, advised by the U.S Gov).
Japan Airlines

Surfboards are allowed on Japan Airline flights and are flown for free as part of your checked baggage allowance. To avoid additional fees your surfboard bag must be under 50lbs and 6’4″ in length. Obviously many boards are over 6’4″ and if yours is one of those, you’ll be charged $200 at the airport.
These type of policies are super common among airlines however, the level at which ticket agents enforce these fees remain a bit of a mystery. Who knows, with a smile and some kind words you may be able to waive this fee. Or better yet, they forget to break out the tape measure and you’re good to go.

Important to note: Surfboards are not accepted to/from Bermuda, Haiti, Peru, Port of Spain, as well as Santo Domingo and Santiago in the Dominican Republic.

An oversized item handling fee applies to any item with a single side longer than 39 inches. Oversized items (surfboards) will count toward your total checked baggage weight, so make sure you have purchased enough checked baggage.
If you choose to bring any oversized items, you pay the fee per item, per flight. Each passenger can bring up to two oversized items. Remember, the oversized item fee is paid in addition to any checked baggage allowance, it does not increase your baggage allowance.
For domestic and international flights with Jetstar you will pay $15.
For domestic and international flights with Jetstar Japan you will pay $18.
For international flights with Jetstar Asia you will pay $19.
No single bag or item can weigh more than 70lbs, even if your checked baggage allowance is 70lbs or 88lbs. If you have a bag or oversized item that’s heavier than 70lbs you’ll have to send it as freight.
For Jetstar Airways (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K), and Jetstar Japan (GK) the max length is 7’6″.
For all other International Jetstar Airways flights the max length is 9 feet.

Surfboards are free as part of your checked luggage. Maximum length is 5’1″ (I’ve also heard their max length is 9’8″ and 8’2″). I’ve also heard from other sources that excess baggage fees do apply when traveling with a surfboard. So clearly, things vary and you should contact them prior to booking.
I’ve had friends travel with Malaysian Airlines and they had nothing but positive things to say… HOWEVER, in the last decade they’ve had one of their planes completely disappear over the Indian Ocean (239 people never to be seen again). And if that wasn’t bad enough, the Russians shot down another one of their planes back in 2014 over Ukraine. 298 people were killed here as well. Is there something going on with Malaysia Airlines or are they simply just the most unlucky company in aviation…?
Either way, travel at your own risk.

I’ve never flown with Phillipine but I’ve heard these policies change based on your location. Some people report having to pay $33 per Kilo and others report having to pay $175 per board.

When flying with Qantas you should never have to pay for surfboard fees as long as the surfboard bag is under 9 feet and 70lbs. Overall good airline with good reputation.
Contrary to the information we found, some surfers report that when flying domestically or through the Americas you may be required to purchase a second piece of luggage. When flying to Africa, Asia, or Europe, weight will be the most important factor.
And for our Aussie rippers hopping across the pond to Bali (your Hawaii), you will flying on Qantas’s codeshare airline, Jetstar. You will be given 30kg (60lbs) and it includes oversized luggage. Nothing longer than 2.3m (7’5″) long will be accepted.
Again, we can’t verify the claims made by audience members but keep this stuff in the back of your mind and don’t be afraid to call ahead to confirm prior to your trip.
Qatar Airways

Based on everything I’ve personally heard, surfboards can be checked in for free as standard luggage and Qatar employees have a reputation of being lenient when it comes to size and weight.
That being said, horror stories of people paying upwards of $1,700 for their oversized surfboards are out there. Double check their website or call prior to booking.

I’m not sure who’s traveling to a land-locked country in the heart of East Africa looking for surf… But for those of you who are, RwandAir does not provide much information when it comes to board transport.
There’s no mention of any sports equipment or size restrictions on their website but I was able to find that they do offer cargo services that can transport a surfboard up to 6’2″. No fees or costs are provided.
Long story short, the message I got from RwandAir is: You’re going to East Africa. Figure it the f*ck out yourself.

Fees will range from $60 to $71 dollars depending on how long you wait to check in your luggage. It will be cheaper to pay for the surfboard fee at the time of booking instead of waiting until the day of your flight.

Shenzhen Airlines

According to Shenzhen Airlines the maximum weight and total dimension limit for each checked baggage can vary depending on your travel class and route. Generally speaking, economy class passengers are allowed up to 44lbs per bag and up to 5’1″ in total length. Business class passengers can bring up to 60lbs per bag and up to 6’6″ in total length.
This being said, when it comes to the topic of surfboards that’s when things get fuzzy.
Some reports say the minimum price you will pay for your surfboard is $400. Because of the lack of information around this airline I would suggest looking into other airline options or confirming your fare way in advance.

Spirit Airlines
Surfboard Fee: $150

We’ve all heard the reputation around Spirit but how do they shape up for surfers? Spirit states that surfboards can be checked in as standard luggage but it must fit within its checked luggage requirements.
Your surfboard bag must be under 40lbs and 6’6″ in length. You will have to pay a $150 fee. They state you can not put other clothes or items into your surfboard bag otherwise you will be charged an additional fee as well (not sure if this is fully enforced).
One of our Facebook followers mentioned that he flew Spirit and was charged $100, not $150. But again, these things vary and we can’t verify claims made on social media!

As long as you don’t exceed the baggage allowance, transporting your surfboard has no additional costs. Important to note: The weight of your special baggage is added to the weight of your checked baggage (plan accordingly).
According to TAAG’s website, “sometimes, because of the item’s size or other specific needs, it might also be necessary to create special transportation conditions”. These are the only situations where additional transportation fares will be charged. Whenever the weight exceeds the baggage allowance, the following fares must be taken into account:

Up to 70lbs and measurements within industry standards (5’2″) – $150

Another expensive option ranging between $150 and $300. Surfboards are not included in your baggage allowance when flying to and from the United States and Canada, if your boards are over 6’6″ expect to get slapped with that lucky $300 jackpot. If they are under 6’5″ you can expect to spend $150.
If you are in Australia, New Zealand, or Japan you may qualify for one free board as a piece of your checked on luggage. Do your research depending on your travel plans, Thai Airways has the potential to be a decent option.

United Airlines state “if you’re flying to or from California, we’ll waive oversized bag charges for up to two of these items. If you’re connecting or have a layover in California, you aren’t eligible for this benefit”.
I personally have flown with United from Washington State to San Diego, California and I do not recall paying more than what the standard fee for checked baggage (I believe around $40). Just hope the emergency door doesn’t fly off in the middle of your flight…
Ps. United has mixed reviews among surfers. Some surfers have zero complaints and others report having multiple boards broke with unapologetic reactions from their employees.

Vistara states there are exceptions to oversize baggage including but not limited to bicycles, golf kits, fishing equipment, paragliding equipment, scuba diving equipment, ski, cricket bats, hockey sticks, pool cues, etc.
Does “etc” include surfboards?
The airline explains that TSAL will charge a flat fee of $24 (per checked-in baggage, inclusive of all taxes) if exceeding the permitted dimensions of 5’1″. So, if my assumptions are correct you should be able to fly with your surfboard for a $24 fee however, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to contact them ahead of time to avoid any issues.

This Mexican airline allows larger musical instruments and sports equipment to be transported as checked baggage. According to the airline they must be properly packed in rigid cases, not weigh more than 71lbs, or exceed 62 linear inches.
Assuming your surfboard exceeds 62 linear inches, you will have to ship your board via cargo which comes at a price of $69. I pulled this info from their cargo website (which is written in Spanish). I recommend contacting them ahead of your flight and confirming size restrictions and relative prices for your itinerary.

Volaris

WTF is Wizz air? If you’re like me, you’ve never heard of this budget European airline. Their surfboard fees aren’t outlandish, just $50 when confirmed online and $70 at the airport. But when it comes to their reliability and customer service that’s where red flags begin to emerge.
I’ve never flown them however, stories have circled stating that Wizz Air will cancel flights, be stingy on refunds, lose luggage, and will unapologetically leave travelers stranded. If you’ve flown this airline let us know what your experience was.

Board bags over 50lbs – $280
You must pre-register your surfboard with the airline prior to the day of departure.
Understanding how each airline operates and how they process surfboards is harder than predicting when the next epic swell is going to come, what your girlfriend is thinking in this exact moment, or what the stock market is going to do tomorrow… You get the point.
But hopefully after reading through this article it becomes a little easier for you.
Because these policies change so frequently, if you have experience with any of the airlines mentioned above please leave a comment below explaining how it went so other surfers can be steered in the right direction. This especially applies if you have any first-hand knowledge that contradicts anything I have written.

If you need me I’ll be at the airport bar waiting for my flight.
This is epic. Almost everyone that has flown to surf somewhere has had issues with their oversized luggage. This is the best breakdown I have ever seen (actually the only one). Personally I have had my boards delivered to Nica when my flight was to Costa. Another instance was when my two boards were broken in three pieces with the glass ons flattened with tire tracks on the bottom of the boards. The airline blamed me for that one saying I put them in like that. Haha! I have learned through 3 decades of surf travel that if you pack your bag with clothes to give to the locals that could benefit from them (before every trip I collect clothes from my friends to give to families), my boards are more protected then doing bubble wrap or anything else that is not necessary. The reactions from the families I meet are priceless. If we all did this we could really make a difference and maybe make the world a better place. Try it, you won’t be disappointed
Thanks Greg! Justin spent a lottt of time on this to make it perfect haha. That’s a great idea about the old clothes for padding, I’ll have to try that next time.
Did you ever get reimbursed for your broken boards, or how about the ones that went to Nica?
I never got reimbursed for the boards. Lacsa did deliver my boards a day later to my place in Jaco after being left in Nica
Oof 🙁 I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone getting reimbursed for damaged boards by the airline.
i went to the mentawais in october/november 2023 emirates airlines. it was a huge pain and i could not take my boards. they have a linear length limit of 114 inches. we were in the shoulder season and i am a long boarder. going with a group for a 50th b-day celebration. had to rent boards in padang. no one at the airline really knew or understood the size limitations. told me i had to use the cargo dept. called the cargo dept and they were like, “no way- we only deal with third party shippers- why did they tell you that ?”. the way they list it in their site it seems like you can pay the oversized fee and get them on. i even went to jfk to try and talk to someone about it. no one understood what i was talking about. i could not take the chance of just winging it at the airport with my boards and my boyfriend’s. such a pain
i had used them 10 years earlier to go to the Maldives. it was such a breeze. they just said go put them in the oversized baggage – over there and no charge. i could not believe how easy it was. thought they would call me back.
it is not that way anymore.
don’t know how the long board pros are gonna travel these days. no long board is under 114 linear inches, when traveling.
Oh no 🙁 Thanks for sharing your experience. I feel like so many of these stories just depend on who was working that day… like how Justin didn’t have to pay anything to bring our boards back from Bali to LA on China Airlines, even though their website says it should cost $180. But yeah most of these airlines sound like a struggle if you’re not packing a shortboard!
Hi Claire, I’m currently trying to book a flight to the Maldives on either Emirates or Singapore Air from Los Angeles. I appreciate you sharing your experience. Are you saying that you came to the airport in advance (at JFK) and showed the Emirates staff their own baggage rules from the Emirates website and they did not understand the policy, so they advised you NOT to try bringing your longboard on the flight to the Ments?
pretty much. i did not go so far as showing them the policy, i made them look it up, but they still did not understand it. they did advise me not to bring my board. had a friend who tried to fly to pavones this past year with her two boards and they were denied, her husband had to take them back. he was dropping her off at the airport. i need to find out the airline. because of the new length, width, height rule…..all boards have to be about 7″2′ i do not think they consulted any surfers when making the new rules.
Wild. Thank you for all this info. I decided to book on Singapore on the outbound and Turkish on the return, mostly based on the time and duration that worked best for me. I’m feeling pretty good about baggage policies for both (Turkish will just charge me for my boards, but at least they will accept them). However, my experience with the Turkish Airlines website and mobile app thus far has been grade F. I was finally able to create an account for their Miles and Smiles program, but cannot log in even after resetting my password twice. And I’ve been unable to reach customer service. So far, very disappointed and surprised because I’ve heard mostly great things about their reputation.
QANTAS is a bit more complicated. If flying domestically or to the Americas you have to buy an extra piece of luggage. Flying to Europe, Africa or Asia it depends on how much your luggage weighs.
Ahhh tricky, thanks for sharing 🙏
Sounds like you’ve been to quite the variety of surf spots!
If you book a flight to Bali from Australia on the Qantas Airlines, you will flying on their codeshare airline Jetstar.
You will automatically be given 30kg and it includes oversized luggage. No longer than 2.3m long
Love it, thanks for the tip!
Hello ! About Air Mauritius : they won’t charge you for you surfboard, as long as your luggages are within the weight limit which is 23 Kgs per person (more for business and first class)
Ooh nice 👏 Is that for any country?
Hawaiian Air, although I consider them a pretty good airline overall, are horrible with board handling. I’ve had multiple damages over the years, last month was the worst. Nose snapped completely off. Following their demands, including filing a claim within 4 hours of the flight, I was told “too bad, we don’t cover surfboards”. Yet another incident with no accountability and no need for them to care.
😖😖😖 hate to hear this. It’s crazy how bad they handle surfboards. You would almost have to TRY to break it, to snap the nose off inside a bag 🤷♂️ yet another story without a happy reimbursement ending 🙁
Thank you so much for doing all the work to provide us with this information.
It would be helpful to explain why each airline got its particular rating. For example American Airlines does not charge anything to transport your surfboard. Yet they only get a rating of 2?
Yeah maybe we should have explained that better… we took the ratings from AirlineRatings.com, and I think they mainly factor things like on-time flights… not surfboard things. That’s why Justin gave our Top 10 Picks, from all the stories he read during his research for this article.
United generally stinks at everything, but I flew from houston to Peru and they treated it as regular luggage as
Long as it wasn’t over 70lbs. Since I only had a carry on, it was not charge (7’6 double board bag). Clearly not what they state on their web site, so I guess I got lucky. 50/50 whether the same think will happen again. Other times I’ve been so nervous with them I just rented boards and figured it was never worth the hassle since every time you call you gets different story.
A success story! 😅 Haha always a nice surprise when they break their rules for you, instead of breaking your surfboard 😆
Flying Wings Airlines between Denpasar and Sumbawa Besar incurs a Rp 500 000, (approx $50 AU), surcharge per board…and yes your bag will be opened if they suspect a less than honest customer…and they see a lot of board bags, so they know the difference…I have stood in the check-in queue and witnessed many travellers blowing up at the staff…this gets you nowhere in Indonesia and also earns the scorn of people waiting in line whose time they are wasting.
Oh man, watching a pissed off surfer yell at the workers is so awkward 😆 I’ve witnessed a couple of those.
Good job putting this together.
It’s spelled Qantas by the way.
We had a weird experience last year with Qantas. Our boards were classed as sporting equipment and therefore, free from LAX to Sydney…and that was how we flew. Leaving Sydney via New Zealand on our Qantas flight, they charged us $300 plus and no amount of explaining or common sense would make them budge…from New Zealand back to LAX via SYD, stopover, they slapped another 300 bux plus. We were livid. Flown Qantas too many times to NOT make an issue over it. Took a long time but they refunded us. So, buyer beware, take a screenshot of your ticket, baggage allowance and all etc. Otherwise it’s a bad start of any trip.
Ahh you’re right haha, I’ll correct that, thanks for pointing that out 🙏
You’re the only person I’ve heard of who has gotten reimbursed by an airline, well done! Did you just fight it out over email, or long phone calls?
Flew American Airlines from US to DR and had huge issues with long boards. Had 3 in our bag (80 pounds) and ended up removing 1. Paid $150 for the 2 and $150 for the single. They told us they were too long. Had 10′ bag. After an hour of begging they said they’d try but if they didn’t fit we’d get pulled from our flight. Made it to DR but haven’t gone back yet. AA was not friendly about it!
Oh boy 🤦♂️ I’ve vowed never to fly American Airlines again, after they lost my suitcase a couple different times.
Just added a surfboard on to Cebu Pacific flight from Cebu to Bali (via Manila)… it was 2,200 PHP which is around $60 AUD / $38 USD
Thanks for the info! Was that a one-time fee or is that paid both ways? Enjoy Bali 🤙🏽
Hi Justin, that was one time.
I’m not sure that Viva Aerobus bit is correct. The terms and conditions section 10.5 Transport of Sports Items includes the phrasing “…after payment of the charge for handling such equipment.”
https://www.vivaaerobus.com/en-us/legal/terms-and-conditions#tycEquipajedeportivo
The additional charges page (https://www.vivaaerobus.com/es-mx/adicionales/nuestros-cargos) lists $1150 MXN for sports equipment if you’re flying domestically. About $69 USD at the moment. Interestingly enough going through the booking process right now puts the actual charge at $1018MXN round trip for the route I checked, so it does seem to vary from their static page.
But anyway, the point is that it does NOT appear to be free, and I wouldn’t call the fees above hidden.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention Arthur. I’m going to look into it and make the changes!
This is best information I’ve seen! Called Aero Mexico to try and plan ahead, they were not much help, said it depends on each airport as to what they will allow and charge.
We have a Boys trip coming up in a couple of weeks to Las Palmeras, fingers crossed. Will keep you posted.
Yeah, it’s such a weird system… No one seems to know what the policy is or what’s going on. Keep us posted! Don’t let them charge you something crazy 🙏🏽
